The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “Raise the Titanic” in the United States and Canada. These were
the cinemas worth seeking out to experience the best presentation of this motion
picture.
“Raise the Titanic” was among eleven confirmed first-run films released in 1980
with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Associated Film Distribution
(AFD) release — directed by Jerry Jameson and starring Jason Robards, Richard
Jordan and Alec Guinness — opened August 1st except in Boston where it premiered
July 30th and opened to the public July 31st.
Pre-release screenings included the world premiere held July 30th at Cinema 57
in Boston.
The 70mm prints of “Raise the Titanic” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A”
encoded Baby Boom format) and full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
AFD circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “Borderline,”
“The Jazz Singer” and “Times Square” during the release of “Raise the Titanic.”
Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately,
any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “Raise the Titanic”
varied by venue and screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has been included in
parenthesis following the cinema name.
