The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
large-format engagements of “Heaven’s Gate” in North America. These were the
cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“Heaven’s Gate” was among eleven confirmed first-run films released in 1980
with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The United Artists release was
directed by Michael Cimino (“The Deer Hunter,” “Year of the Dragon”) and
starred Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, Isabelle Huppert, and Jeff
Bridges.
The 70mm prints of “Heaven’s Gate” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A”
encoded noise reduction; five front/one surround) and letterboxed imagery
(approximately 2.39:1) blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
The running time of the short-lived 1980 screenings was 219 minutes. The
1981 revised cut ran 149 minutes.
UA circulated/had planned to circulate 70mm Six-Track Dolby
coming-attraction trailers for “The Formula” and “Raging Bull” during the
release of “Heaven’s Gate.” UA circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby
coming-attraction trailers for “Clash of the Titans,” “For Your Eyes Only”
and “Tarzan, the Ape Man” during the spring ’81 re-release of “Heaven’s
Gate.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well.
Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of
“Heaven’s Gate” varied by venue and screening.
