The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of “Can’t Stop the Music” in North America. These were
arguably the best cinemas in which to experience this motion picture.
“Can’t Stop the Music” was among eleven confirmed first-run films released
in 1980 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Allan Carr production
and AFD release was directed by Nancy Walker and starred the Village People,
Valerie Perrine, Bruce Jenner, Steve Guttenberg and Paul Sand.
The 70mm print run of “Can’t Stop the Music” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo
(“A”-encoded “baby boom” format) and full-frame imagery blown up from
anamorphic 35mm.
AFD circulated 70mm trailers for “The Jazz Singer” and “Raise the Titanic”
during the release of “Can’t Stop the Music.” As well, other studios
circulated 70mm trailers during this period. The 70mm trailers, if any,
ultimately seen during 70mm presentations of “Can’t Stop the Music” varied
by venue and screening.
